Unlocking human agency.

I care a lot about human agency: why people act, why they don’t, and what systems can do about it.

I study engineering psychology at Aalto and work across research, programs, operations and community building.

Community is not the soft layer around the “real” work. It is often the infrastructure that makes action possible: the person who tells you to try, the room where asking is normal, the network that makes an opportunity visible, the group that gives you somewhere to belong before you have proven you deserve to be there.

As more of life becomes individualized, mediated through screens and optimized for attention rather than belonging, I think we should be taking community a lot more seriously. The problems I care about are behavioral and systemic, but they are also profoundly social. People become capable through other people, they don’t act alone.

Recent work: an ecosystem mapping for the City of Espoo, a mentoring pilot built from zero, workshops with upper secondary students, and a multidisciplinary design sprint delivered for two corporate partners.

Mapping Espoo's youth entrepreneurship ecosystem

The city wanted to know how well its existing support actually reaches young people. The work was commissioned under the Yritysten ja yrittäjyyden Espoo development programme, benefit goal 4: that every young person in Espoo gets the capability and the spark for entrepreneurship.

I designed the research and ran it over one summer: stakeholder interviews, conversations with young people, a survey, and the synthesis into a report for the city. Over 50 interviews went into the project, counting the conversations that built the partnerships as well as the ones that became data.

The stakeholder interviews followed the path a young person might take, from primary school and Yrityskylä through vocational and upper secondary education, universities and startup programmes, to incubators, employment services and youth work, across Espoo, Helsinki and Vantaa.

The sample had to include the young people no programme had reached yet.

So the youth interviews happened where young people are in summer: Sello, Iso Omena, Oodi, Otaniemi and Entresse, in pairs and small groups, with a few by video call. The report keeps its levels of evidence apart, from our own data and practitioners’ observations to national data, research literature and the interpretation built on them, and it states the limits of its sample up front.

A mentoring pilot built from zero

Young people who are interested in entrepreneurship need access to people as much as to information. We built the pilot end to end: the concept, mentor recruitment and matching, onboarding, mentor training and support materials, and the three touchpoints that hold a term together.

I introduced the program to students at Lauttasaaren yhteiskoulu in March, ran onboarding in June, and the kickoff was done together with the Finnish SUP and Surf Federation.

Workshops for the next generation of founders and builders

Problem Day, Lauttasaaren yhteiskoulu, August 2026. A six-hour workshop on finding and validating problems, run with Aveksana for 25 students in eight teams. One loop: expand, sharpen, test, kill. Teams took their problems out of the building and interviewed at least five people who were not classmates.

Killing an idea does not send you back to the start. It puts you ahead of everyone who never went far enough to notice theirs was dead.

Activation workshop, Etu-Töölön lukio, September 2026. Two 75-minute sessions for 102 students on the NY Vuosi Yrittäjänä course, run with a co-facilitator in parallel rooms. It rests on one finding: people systematically misjudge what others think of them, and always in the same direction. Students wrote a real request and guessed how many people would say yes on Tuesday, then counted the actual answers on Thursday. They produced the research result before they saw the published one.

What I measure on both days is the change in how students think. The output produced in the room is beside the point.

A multidisciplinary design sprint on COPD care

A 48-hour design sprint with teams from several disciplines, built around a challenge from AstraZeneca and Nordic Healthcare Group on care for people living with COPD. I owned the partner relationship and the challenge development: worked with AstraZeneca's medical scientific advisor and NHG to shape a problem statement that would hold for a full sprint, then coordinated stakeholders, mentors, participant composition, marketing materials, logistics and the delivery itself.

What I am working towards

I want to understand what makes people able to act on what matters to them, and build systems that make that ability less dependent on luck.

Right now that has taken me into youth entrepreneurship, education and access. Over the longer term I am interested in addiction, violence, suicide prevention, mental health and the systems surrounding human behavior.

I do not intend to spend my life studying those problems from a distance. I aim to build things that change them.

Human behavior is not an individual problem. You can study the person, map the system, build something and test what changes.

The other half of this is neuroscience, which is where my interest started and where it keeps returning. I read across brain research and run the occasional home experiment with transcranial stimulation.

Who I am

I am Jennifer. I am ambitious, curious, intense, and very difficult to convince that something is impossible simply because it has not been done yet.

I am the youngest of seven, which meant growing up surrounded by people who already had stories, opinions and lives of their own by the time I arrived. My mother raised me resourceful and stubborn. We used to compete over which of us was more pahasisuinen, a Karelian word that translates badly but means something close to wickedly persistent. My father taught me to zoom out, question the premise, look for the story underneath the story, and remember that laughter prolongs life.

I care a lot about understanding, and even more about what understanding allows us to change. I tend to move between levels naturally: the brain, the person, the room, the organization, the system. I like finding the assumption everyone else has quietly agreed to leave alone and turning it upside down. I like models that explain something useful. More than that I like evidence that ruins a beautiful model and creates chaos, complexity.

I have strong opinions. I also have very little interest in defending them once data shifts and reality stops cooperating.

I am deeply ambitious about my life. I want to work on problems that you could fill a lifetime with: human agency, addiction, mental health, suicide prevention, violence, inequality, and the mechanisms that make people more or less able to direct their own lives. I want to build things, lead people, contribute to science, create institutions and eventually work at scales I cannot yet comprehend.

At the same time, I do not want achievement to consume the person doing the achieving. I care about sleep, movement, swimming, nature, solitude, long conversations, people I love, good food, ridiculous ideas and going somewhere simply because I have never been there before. I want seriousness without solemnity, discipline without becoming rigid, and a life with enough room for both consequential work and excellent stories.

I have already changed my mind about what my life is supposed to look like several times.
I hope that continues.

Building a board for the year of community

I’m putting together a team for the Aaltoes board of 2027: bringing new people in, building programmes that outlast us, and making entrepreneurship in Finland something more people recognise themselves in. Real people, real building.
